L.P. goes to Vienna, Austria!

Schönbrunn literally means beautiful well.

Here you will see the back of the Palace, a vast garden which is tended by the skilled crew and gardeners of Unsere Garten (our garden, government’s department assigned in beautifying the city) separates the Palace from the Neptune fountain (photo below). The area is lined by bushes and 32 statues of Greek and Roman dieties.

Neptune Fountain: at the centre of this figural group above a rocky grotto stands Neptune in a shell-shaped chariot, his trident in his hand. To his left is a nymph, while on his right kneels the sea-goddess Thetis, and at the foot of the grotto are the Tritons. They hold conch shell trumpets and are restraining the hippocampi or sea-horses drawing Neptune’s chariot across the seas.”

The Neptune fountain is located at the foot of the hill, and if you go up that hill, which I do a lot for exercise (lol) you’ll end up at the Gloriette (French for little glory). It is a building in a garden erected on a site that is elevated with respect to the surroundings.

gloriousgloriette

This structure is the largest Gloriette in the world. It was used as a dining hall and festival hall until the end of the monarchy, it houses a café nowadays, and on the roof is an observation platform that overlooks Vienna.

The complex also includes a maze, a zoo, an orangerie and a Palm house among others. One hundred and thirteen metres long, the Palm House consists of a 28-metre high central pavilion and two lateral pavilions which are three metres lower. Linked by tunnel-like passages, the pavilions contain different climatic zones: a ‘cold’ house to the north, a temperate zone in the central pavilion and a tropical climate in the south pavilion. The necessary temperatures are achieved by means of a steam heating system which means that rare specimens from all over the world can be grown here.
